Quest for the Throne - King's Quest V - Session 1.5

After lo these many moons, it is time for us to reembark on the Quest for the Throne, as we continue King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder.

Last time on Quest for the Throne, we completed the fourth game in this series, and began this one. This game sees the entire castle of Daventry swept away by the evil wizard Mordack while King Graham is walking about in the woods. But an annoying owl witnessed the entire thing, and can introduce Graham to another wizard who can help him. He sends Graham flying a great distance to an unfamiliar land...whence he must find his own way. With the help of an annoying owl.

It's been so long since last time, though, that I don't remember much about what happened after that. There were singing ants, a bunch of unhelpful citizenry, a river that was really easy to fall into and die...um...a bakery...that annoying owl... Well, maybe more will come back to me as I play.

Tune in tonight at 9pm ET for the continued adventures of King Graham!

A Holiday Tradition?

Thanksgiving isn't the only holiday landing on a Thursday this holiday season.

It'd be a shame to leave such a good game unfinished, so at 6pm ET, I'll continue streaming Secret of Evermore! Around 9, I'll add some...unusual holiday music to the mix. Gotta have a little proper Christmas spirit, right?

Merry Christmas, and I hope to see you then!

A Thanksgiving Tradition

20 years ago or so, I started a new game in Secret of Evermore on Thanksgiving. Ever since then, the game's made me think of my grandmother's house, good food, and time with family. It's very nostalgic for me.

Now, I'm going to share the tradition with you! Tune in now, I'll be playing until 9pm ET.

Then, at 9, I'll be sharing another Thanksgiving tradition on Radio PSI: Alice's Restaurant, by Arlo Guthrie. Join us then, as well!

I hope all of you Americans are having a wonderful holiday, and to everybody else, a good Thursday.

Stone of Graves - Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Session 2

Last week, I made an unfortunate discovery: my Final Fantasy II save had vanished. Heck, my entire emulator had vanished, and probably the save file with it. I wasn't sure I felt like restarting the game just to spend a lot more time grinding on the air, so I picked a different game. We began playing Tales of Phantasia, a wonderful late-period SNES RPG that didn't see the light of day in North America until the GBA remake. I'll write a proper introduction for the game the next time we feature it.

Halloween may be more than a week past, but we haven't made our last visit to the cemetery...

Join us tonight at 9pm ET on Stone of Graves as we continue to battle the malign forces of [Xel'lotath] in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem!

Throne of Sick Day

Hey, everybody! It's been a couple weeks. Stuff's been busy. And it would've continued to be busy tonight, except I think I'm coming down with something. Now, most of my cohosts have pretty hardy immune systems, so I wouldn't worry too much about them being around me, but they're all busy tonight, too. Brendan and Mabry will be doing what I would've been, and...

John and Melissa got married today! Many congratulations to them. I can't wait to see the wedding photos. :D

But since I'm without my usual cohorts tonight, we resume the fight against the Paramekian Empire in Final Fantasy II!

Last time, we freed the people who were kidnapped and forced to work in the mines, and did a whole lot of grinding as we wandered back and forth, trying to figure out where to go next. Just makes us more prepared for whatever we face!

Join the retro rebellion tonight at 9pm ET!

Stone of Graves - Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Deep into that darkness peering,
Long I stood there, wondering, fearing,
Doubting...

Alexandra Roivas is awakened in the dark of night by a phonecall. Something has happened to her grandfather. She needs to go identify the body.

Frustrated by the incompetence of the local police, Alexandra undertakes an investigation of the estate herself. There, she finds many interesting things among her grandfather's studies, and becomes embroiled in more than she could ever have expected.

It's October. That means it's time for fright! Or, at least, being very creeped out. Tonight at 9pm ET, we begin Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. This is a favorite of many of our hosts, so we'll have lots to say during this playthrough. Tune in on Twitch, and join us in IRC!

Dawn of War II - Session 2

So, a couple weeks ago, we decided we'd had enough of Dungeon Keeper for the time being. There's not a lot of story there—just more quips from the narrator about how awful these happy places are, and how much better it is after we've razed them.

Instead, John suggested we start playing Dawn of War II, with its cooperative story mode. I gotta say, having only played the first game in the series, with its massive-scale tactical battles, I was surprised by the major change of gameplay in this one. Rather than a typical RTS, it's more like a squad-based Diablo. As such, I can't really directly compare the two games, but I am quite enjoying it.

I, uh...I forget what happened in the game last time. One place was getting overrun by orks, and then we went to another planet, and back to the first one. Anyway, we'll be continuing from there, should be a good time. Tune in tonight at 9pm ET as we continue into the grim darkness of the future!

Quest for the Throne - King's Quest IV - Session 1.5

The Quest goes on! Tonight, we continue King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella.

Immediately following the events of King's Quest III — the return of long lost Prince Alexander and the rescue of Princess Rosella — King Graham suffers a heart attack. Though not dead, he's fading fast. Unable to bear the sight, Rosella flees her father's chambers to be by herself in the throne room. While there, the fairy Genesta contacts her through the magic mirror, offering a cure for her father if she'll help her in return. Seeing little other hope, Rosella accepts Genesta's offer, and is transported to the land of Tamir.

Last time on Quest for the Throne, it didn't take us long to finish King's Quest III, and so we began The Perils of Rosella. The land of Tamir, like much of the world of King's Quest, is full of fairy tales and enchantment. Though captured by the evil fairy Lolotte, her son is quite taken with Rosella, allowing us to avoid death and work our way closer to her to take back Genesta's talisman. Lolotte puts us to task after task, however, with no end in sight.

Will we be able to take back the talisman, so Genesta can return Rosella to Daventry? Will we be able to find the magical fruit that will restore King Graham to health? How much more stuff will we have to do to accomplish either of those things? Tune in tonight at 9pm ET and find out!

Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance

That's a bit of advice I should listen to right there.

I did not properly plan for this week — time completely got away from me — so tonight's show is a mystery. If my cohosts read my mind or kept track of weeks themselves, then we'll be playing Dungeon Keeper tonight. If, however, they took my silence to mean they would not be needed this week, it'll be Final Fantasy II. Probably won't know which it'll be until showtime is upon us, though.

...Sure, that works.

So tune in tonight at 9pm ET, find out what game we're playing, and hang out with us while we do! Talking with y'all while we stream is half the fun.

Quest for the Throne - King's Quest III - Session 4

We brave adventurers return once again to continue the Quest for the Throne with King's Quest III!

When last we left our hero Gwydion, he discovered his true identity as Alexander, the lost prince of Daventry! But he was still firmly in the clutches of the evil sorcerer Manannan, who had kidnapped him as an infant. Using his master's frequent and lengthy absences to accomplish much, he cast a spell from his master's own grimoire and turned him into a cat.

With nothing to hold him in Llewdor any longer, Alexander sought passage back to Daventry with a crew of pirates. They were, of course, not to be trusted, and they locked him up, taking all his possessions, and planning to sell him into slavery. But this wasn't Alexander's first rodeo — he outwitted them and escaped on the wings of an eagle to his long forgotten home, which he found in utter ruin, under the baleful tyranny of a three-headed dragon. With still more of the evil sorcerer's magic up his sleeve, though, he hid himself with a spell of invisibility and brought the dragon low with a conjured thunderstorm, rescuing his sister from being the dragon's next victim.

What awaits Alexander on his return? What will he think of the rest of his family, and they of him? What troubles still lurk on the road to rebuilding Daventry? Tune in tonight at 9pm ET and find out!

Last time on Quest for the Throne, Gwydion was still firmly in the grasp of the wicked Manannan, but his freedom draws ever closer...as does his impending demise. Sneaking around the house and the surrounding environs, we've found a spellbook and many of the components necessary for casting its contents — and, indeed, have done so with a few. We may now speak with animals, transform into a fly or an eagle...and maybe some other things, I forget. I'm sure they weren't important...

Final Fantasy II - Session 2

Driven from their home by the conquering Paramekian Empire, four orphans are pursued by ruthless soldiers. They stand no chance, and are quickly subdued — a few more casualties in the fall of Phin.

Three of them awake in Altair, under the care of Princess Hilda, leader of the Wild Rose Rebellion. Their fourth friend, though, is nowhere to be found. With no home or family to return to, the three youths pledge themselves to the Rebellion, to seek revenge against the Empire, and, just maybe, find their lost friend.

I didn't intend to return to Final Fantasy II so soon, but that's how it's turned out.

Like I said on the show the last time, I think this is a very underrated game in the series. I first played it immediately after beating the original Final Fantasy for the first time, and as good as that one was, I was absolutely blown away by this one. While Final Fantasy constructed a fascinating world for you to discover, discover was about all you did. The plot advanced very little over the course of the game; the player just unraveled a mystery that had existed for ages. Final Fantasy II, on the other hand, presents a world embroiled in war, gradually falling to an immensely powerful empire. Things happen. The world changes. The characters are more than just blank slates — players and NPCs both have distinct personalities. There are more "Oh $#!^" moments in this game than in most I've played. I was very impressed by what a great step forward this game made in the series.

Join us tonight at 9pm ET as we continue this classic, here on Throne of Games!

Filler Up

So, my brain was elsewhere for a lot of this week, and it still kinda feels that way now. Suffice it to say, I did no planning for tonight, and as a result, most of my cohosts made other plans.

As a result...we're playing something tonight. I have an idea of what — I'm feeling in a bit of a retro mood — but I'm not 100% committed to it right now. It's essentially up in the air. But the show is still on!

Quest for the Throne - King's Quest III - Session 2

It has been sometime since we last set out on our Quest for the Throne, but fear not! Tonight we sojourn on.

Gwydion, a slave boy, kept by a wicked sorcerer, takes the opportunity to venture beyond his home in his master's absence. He learns that the people of the town beneath their mountain are not the cruel villains they were made out to be, and that he is not the first slave his master has kept — he is merely the most recent in a long line to have served him, only to be killed on their eighteenth birthday. With precious little time before his own birthday, and few opportunities to leave his home for very long, Gwydion attempts to gather the necessary magical components to overthrow his master without raising his suspicions.

After that? Well, the world's wide open for him to explore. Maybe, with his freedom, he'll find a new purpose...

Final Fantasy XI - The British are Leaving!

Last time on Throne of Games, Nag'molada released the avatar of Promathia, seduced by his promises of knowing the ultimate Truth. But we were able to defeat him, and his material form was banished by the tears of the Goddess. The apocalypse was cancelled.

However, we couldn't trigger the final cutscenes without waiting until Japanese midnight — a trick they used to employ frequently to prevent people from just plowing straight through the story missions.

So tonight at 9pm ET, we will be watching the conclusion of Final Fantasy XI: The Chains of Promathia, and then taking a step backward and doing Rise of the Zilart, the game's first expansion.

Final Fantasy XI - The Gift of the Twilight God

Last time on Throne of Games, we caught up with Nag'molada in the Chamber of Eventide, where we learned that Selh'teus had died to destroy the Emptiness within him, but was given life again by Phoenix...and his Emptiness found another vessel. To seal this away, Yve'noile gave her life to bind this very incarnation of Promathia within the audience chamber of the Palace of Hu'Xzoi.

Selh'teus then directs us to the five towers of the Garden of Ru'Hmet, where the Chains of Promathia that weigh on the Children of Altana may be purged from our souls: the Apathy of the Hume, the Envy of the Mithra, the Cowardice of the Tarutaru, the Arrogance of the Elvaan, the Rage of the Galka.

The rest of the session was spent navigating the Garden. It's pretty big.

Final Fantasy XI: The Celestial Capital

Last time on Throne of Games, we discovered that the man we know as Louverance is actually...an impostor? A doppelganger? A twin? It's yet unclear. But we didn't have much time to dwell on it; en route to Al'taieu, we were assaulted by Tenzen and the Chebukkis, who sought to kill us so the crystals' light we possessed would return to the fifth Mothercrystal. But Prishe intervened, convinced Tenzen that he was being an idiot, and not to obey Phoenix, that there was another way.

Suddenly, our airships were bathed in a strange red glow, rising from below, and we found ourselves before the Al'taieu Mothercrystal. But while the other mothercrystals exuded a comforting warmth, this crystal was shrouded in cold. Greeted there by Selh'teus, he explains that it had lost much of its power, and it could no longer sustain Al'Taieu in another dimension, thus releasing the Keeper of the Apocalypse upon Vana'diel. Then Selh'teus tries to kill us to return our light to the Mothercrystal. Everybody wants us dead!

But Prishe stepped in again, saving us from doom. She persuaded Selh'teus that we could do more good possessing the light of the fifth Mothercrystal than if it possessed the light we carried from the other four. He seems moved...but we were interrupted by Nag'molada before he could open the way to Al'taieu for us. Nag'molada, ever arrogant and greedy, broke the amulet we possessed, and stole from us the Light of Mea. However, upon gaining entrance to the Celestial Capital, he was confounded that he could still not hear the whispers of its residents, and stormed off to gain entrance to the Palace of Hu'Xzoi. We, however, could hear the voice, begging us to come to it.

Entering the palace would not be so easy for us, though...the gates were sealed by a power, and the switches controlling them had to be struck all at once for it to open for us. We enlisted the Chebukkis for this task, who had already devised a new scheme — they knew the ancient king had two sons and a daughter, long lost to him. Suspecting him near mad, they plan to pose as his heirs, and live there as royalty. I don't suspect it will play out so well for them...

Entering the palace, we find only the entry chamber open to us, and the voice we heard coming from behind a great door. From another came Prishe, who had been chasing Nag'molada, who was trying to find the Chamber of Eventide. With another path now open to us, we shall proceed.

Tune in tonight at 9pm ET as we further explore the Palace of Hu'Xzoi in Final Fantasy XI: The Chains of Promathia on Throne of Games!

Final Fantasy XI - The Eye of Altana

With the last of its energy, Phoenix saved us from Bahamut. With its dying breath, it bid Tenzen lead us to the fifth Mothercrystal. Tenzen's motivations are called into question...but he has yet to act against us. In a misguided attempt at reaching the Mothercrystal, the Armathrwn Society commanded Jeunoan troops to assault Movalpolos. Distraught at the loss of his friends, Jabbos nearly kills the Chebukkis, blaming them for their deaths. Nag'molada, meanwhile, escaped down the Moblins' tunnel to Al'taieu, caving it in behind him, cutting us off from following. We turn to Cid to fly us in pursuit to the Sea of Shu'meyo...but his airship is out of commission after its encounter with Bahamut. Repairs commence!

...But the damage is more extensive than Cid realized. Unable to repair the crystal propulsion unit, we seek another piece of ancient technology that Cid can work from. And apparently, such an item, the Chebukkis were supposed to have delivered to him already. Just like them to always be up to mischief — they've instead spirited it away to Tavnazia. We recover the item, and then call back Shikaree Z to Bastok. On our way back, we encounter her Shikaree sisters...where Z has a life-changing epiphany. By the nature of Promathia, their path of sin hunting is, itself, a sin. She bids her companions to continue protecting her homeland, while she continues to seek answers with our party.

Tonight at 9pm ET, we will seek out Louverance, and return to Bastok to see what Cid has prepared for us. Don't miss this next thrilling installment of Final Fantasy XI: The Chains of Promathia!

Dungeon Keeper - Session 1

Eversmile. Set in the Realm of Joy, the people of Eversmile are plagued only by aching facial muscles, and not anthrax, as we had hoped. Eversmile is a disgusting land of good humor and polite frivolity.

Dungeon Keeper is a classic management sim, putting you in charge of a dungeon full of imps, demons and other nasties to draw in and kill adventuring heroes. Created by Bullfrog Studios, masters of the genre, this game is full of tongue-in-cheek humor like their Theme Hospital, but much darker.

Front Mission - Session 5

Last time on Front Mission:

  • Infiltrated and destroyed a USN battery near Fort Monus guarded by a unit of prototype Wanzers being field-tested by Driscoll.
  • Engaged and defeated USN forces in Fort Monus led by Grieg, formerly of Hell's Wall, and using new "Sea King"-type Wanzer from Sakata Industries.
  • Rescued Sakata Industries president Reiji Sakata from attack by terrorist group Soul of Huffman
  • Sought out fleeing USN forces; combat was interrupted by a notification that a ceasefire treaty had been signed. USN forces refused to lay down their arms.

The end of the Second Huffman War did not mean the end of the story for Carrior Crow, however. Our next assignment is to track down and eliminate the Soul of Huffman. Meanwhile, strange things are still afoot on the island...

Final Fantasy XI - The Chains that Bind Us

Continuing tonight - Final Fantasy XI: The Chains of Promathia.

Last time, we learned that Esha'ntarl is, in fact, Cardinal Mildaurion, and that Prishe was born the Keeper of the Apocalypse, but in a ritual meant to cleanse the darkness from her, something went wrong, and her age was frozen, though her darkness was sealed in a piece of magicite. While the heroes sought to learn the location of Al'taieu, the Celestial Capital, Esha'ntarl prepared the Jeunoan fleet to launch a surprise attack on Bahamut.

When their search turned up little useful information, the heroes met with Cid, and took his newly-completed airship to meet with the fleet...where they found Prishe had stowed away, and was in trouble. They proceeded to board the other airships trying to find her, encountering several mammets, and two enormous Zilart automatons, Ultima and Omega, created and controlled by Nag'molada. After being defeated, Nag'molada summoned Bahamut directly to them, ruining the surprise attack.

However, Prishe took this opportunity to try to surrender herself to Bahamut, that he would destroy the Keeper of the Apocalypse, and summon Promathia with such power assembled so that he may be defeated once and for all. Bahamut, though, had other ideas — Eha'ntarl's ritual years ago had succeeded, and she was no longer the Keeper; and he scoffed that mortals thought they had the power to defeat the Twilight God, or even the true Keeper.

But fearing that the meddling of these mortals will unleash doom on the world, Bahamut attacks the airship. Tenzen tries to counter his attack with Phoenix while everybody escapes. A bright flash washes everything in white...and we awake once again in Lufaise Meadows, the three Chebukkis unconscious nearby.

Join us tonight at 9pm ET as we continue our adventure in Vana'diel!

Quest for the Throne - King's Quest III - Session 1

Last time on Quest for the Throne, we found and rescued the woman of King Graham's dreams, through a bunch of events that weren't at all creepy — not in the least — thus completing King's Quest II: Romancing the Stones. However, upon his defeat, the evil mastermind left Graham and his family with a curse: that ever shall his family be troubled, and never shall his heirs sit upon the throne of Daventry.

Tonight, we continue the story of the royal family...or do we?

Where are we? How many years have passed? Where is King Graham? From the outset, King's Quest III: To Heir is Human leaves many questions for the player, answers waiting just out of reach. What's going on here? Tune in tonight at 10pm ET and find out!

Final Fantasy XI - Vana'diel Revisited

So, earlier this week, I took a look at our schedule, considered other external factors affecting it, and made an adjustment. And the result, since we haven't played in such a long time, is thus:

We are returning to Final Fantasy XI, continuing our adventure in the world of Vana'diel. As it's been a while, here's a brief catch-up.

After the encounter in Promyvion Vahzl, Diabolos tells the party of Selh'teus' true intentions — and, while the consequences of his actions may be dire, his desire is only to protect the celestial capital — and that the true fate of mankind is to be destroyed by Bahamut, in order to save Vana'diel from a darker fate at the hands of Promathia, the Twilight God.

Prishe has other ideas, though, and seeks to avert disaster by killing the Keeper of the Apocalypse. She runs off, leaving the rest to figure out their own way. Ulmia seeks to stymie the efforts of the Shikarees, who hunt Prishe for her heresy. Tenzen searches for Selh'teus to learn more of the spread of the Emptiness, and to try to stop it. Meanwhile, Louverance follows a trail of ancient artifacts, leading him to a cult of Moblins who worship a statue of Promathia, which drove them to leave their caves and begin pillaging the surface, believing it their destiny to destroy the children of Altana.

With the fate of Prishe still in question, all paths converge on Jeuno.

Now, normally, we'd be beginning at 9, but real life intervenes — I've gotta go walk in a parade, which is expected to run until about half an hour after that. I'll try to be back as soon as possible after that, so look for the show starting at 10pm ET. I might run a bit later than that, but stick around, watch DJ Mon, and I'll show up when I'm able.

Quest for the Throne - King's Quest II - Session 1.5

Last time on Quest for the Throne, we completed King's Quest: Quest for the Crown in the first two hours of the show, and began King's Quest II: Romancing the Stones in the remaining time. So tonight, we will continue!

King Graham, with his head in the clouds, consults his magic mirror, and falls immediately in love with the woman he sees there imprisoned in a tower. With newfound drive, he sets out for the land of Kolyma to rescue the fair damsel, certain his quest will only take him a few days.

After arriving in Kolyma, we pretty much wandered around aimlessly, finding the Door of Destiny, but not much else that yet seems entirely of consequence. Of course, this is an adventure game — everything is important and useful, somehow.

Join us for our continued journey through this strange land tonight at 9pm ET!
