Quest for the Throne - King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride

Last time on Quest for the Throne, we completed King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow, which left us a scant 15 minutes or so of time at the end of the show...so we went ahead and began King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride. The story so far: Princess Rosella is uninterested in any of her suitors. While on a walk through the woods of Daventry, her mother, Queen Valanice, tries to convince her how important it is for her to find a husband. Having none of it, Rosella finds a portal in a pond, and jumps in, seeking adventure. Worried for her daughter, Valanice jumps in after her...just in time to see Rosella abducted by some brute. Valanice falls out the other end of the portal, finding herself in a desert. Rosella is nowhere to be seen.

King's Quest VII is the first game in the series where you get to play as Valanice (who hadn't really played much of a role in the series since the second game). It also takes a major turn in art direction, opting for a more cartoony, Don Bluth-inspired style...but they don't quite hit the mark. The sprite animations mostly look quite good, but the cutscenes look sloppy. The technology could be in part to blame for that, though. One of the studio's later games, Torin's Passage, retains the style, but does a much better job with it. If I can get it working on this computer, that may be a game we have to visit sometime on here...

Tune in tonight at 9pm ET to catch the (almost) beginning of King's Quest VII!
