Their first game as an independent studio, Psychonauts set the standard for what could be expected out of Double Fine Productions: colorful characters, clever writing, and solid (if imperfect) gameplay.
The collect-a-thon genre is often criticized for being too samey — find all the items in an area, then proceed to the next. Monotony is certainly a pitfall that would be easy to fall into. But Psychonauts takes this formula and plays it over a wide variety of engaging and carefully-crafted levels that are a joy to explore.
